Teaching

Teaching has been central to Ian’s work since embarking on a career as a professional guitarist.  His time as a lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he ran the technique class, alongside his 1:1 teaching, provided him with invaluable experience forming young professionals at a very high level and his knowledge of the fundamentals of guitar technique forms the basis of his teaching. Whatever your level or experience, Ian would be delighted to help you get to where you want to be as a player!

TESTIMONIALS

  • Marguerita McGilchrist

“Ian has been giving my adult daughter, who has learning difficulties, guitar lessons over the last 5 years. When we had to change from in person lessons to online lessons with the onset of Covid, I was concerned that this might prove less effective, but this has not been the case at all and indeed we continue with online lessons. Ian’s perceptive sensitivity as he listens, comments and advises comes over as if he were in the same room. His engaging positivity makes it easy to ask questions or admit one is not sure about a point – a quality often lacking. The joy and enthusiasm he has ignited and the progress my daughter has made speak volumes.”

  • Professor David J Cooke

“Ian is an inspirational teacher. He came highly recommended and I have not been disappointed. He has the uncanny knack of identifying what needs to be changed and, critically, he can then explain how to change. He wears his considerable expertise lightly. He is warm, encouraging and enthusiastic in his approach. I cannot recommend him highly enough.”

  • Paul Foley

“Ian coached me through the grades from 6 to 8. More importantly, he worked with me on my technique and musicality so the I could play beautiful music that I had thought beyond me.  A hugely talented musician who is also a terrific teacher.”

  • Roger Sheehy

“I studied privately with Ian over a period of 4 years.I have been lucky to have had several great classical guitar teachers, the time spent with Ian was the longest and the most valuable. He provided me with the tools to continue improving my musicianship and technique and I am continually improving as a consequence.Ian is a great player as evidenced by his YouTube videos and is inspirational as a teacher”

  • Jack Wales

“I studied guitar with Ian Watt for the best part of a year. During this time, he guided me towards my guitar related goals with his incredible knowledge of the repertoire, and of the technique of the modern classical guitar. Ian has the ability to concisely lay out his professional opinion and this was completely lifechanging for my technical and musical development. Because of these amazing lessons from Ian, I was able to continue my studies further with Prof. Hubert Käppel in Germany. I couldn’t recommend Ian more for any stage from beginner to professional. Simply fantasic!!”
